Leveraging Social Media in Your Job Search

by Kara Jondal January 09 2012

In this day and age, social networking is utilized more than ever. Many times it is hard to see the immediate benefit from joining sites like Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter, especially if you are in the 50+ age range. Nonetheless, job experts agree it is important to be comfortable using these and other social media tools.  Forbes lays out six useful tips for the social media challenged:

1.       Become a Linkedin member

2.       Try SimplyHired’d “Who Do I know?” tool

3.       Sign up for a Twitter account

4.       Participate in online job real time chats

 5.       Tap into virtual job fairs

6.       Join Facebook

The bottom line is social networking is all about making connections. Take advantage of the ability to connect with old colleagues, clients, and customers. Become familiar with social media and take the most appropriate approach for you and your job expectations.
