This brief synopsis is a little old, but thought I'd get this up here now. I'll get a brief synopsis of the TechEd North America event up here shortly as well.
- The setup was 41 Hyper-V servers in a glass "show-case".
- Plus 4x ILL rooms with 100 client computers each, and 275 HOL client computers.
- All those 675 clients were thin client computers (= size of a cigar box), using only Internet Explorer to connect to the Hyper-V servers.
The benefits of the thin client setup is: no need to deploy large lab files to the client computers, no need to source expensive high-spec workstations, and very low power consumption. It took only 40 minutes to roll out Embedded Windows 7 to all the client computers. Plus the server-based approach with just connecting browsers even allows you to offer the labs post-event for a period - if needed.
The 400 client computers all started labs at the same time, connecting to the Hyper-V servers, when the scheduled ILL sessions began. It took only 7 minutes to prestart the correct 400 labs before each ILL session started.
Blog post
Jeff Woolsey from the Virtualization team did a blog post on the official Virtualization team blog, describing the MMS 2010 labs setup. You will also notice a more resent write up on our TechEd event posted by Vijay Tewari. See http://blogs.technet.com/virtualization/.
TechNet Edge
Barry Shilmover from the System Center team also did an interview with TechNet Edge describing the MMS 2010 lab setup as well. See http://edge.technet.com/Media/Virtualization-and-Thin-Clients-in-the-Hands-On-Labs-at-MMS/.
